Place a living cell on an empty grid. Next step — it dies, and its four neighbors are born. A cross appears from nothing.

Place two cells close together. Where their crosses overlap — two neighbors cancel out. The cell stays dead. Simple interference, but the result is deceptive.

Now imagine four sources. Their waves collide, cancel, merge. The output pattern looks nothing like four crosses. It looks like chaos — but it's pure determinism.
